David Del Val Latorre

Speaker Bio

David del Val Latorre is Director of Open Gateway at Telefonica. Open Gateway is an industry-wide initiative to expose Telco capabilities to third party developers through APIs. David drives the product definition, partnerships, and go to market activities and is responsible for the overall coordination of all the Telefonica teams involved in the initiative, including the business and technical teams at the global and local levels.


Previously he was the director of Core Innovation at Telefonica, where he oversaw the creation of new disruptive products and services for the group. In this role, he led the innovation and the creation of new business units around new paradigms such as Web 3, Artificial Intelligence, Edge Computing, IoT, Big Data, and Digital Video. He also directed the spinoff of several startups and the creation of a multi-telco JV in the advertising business.


He spent the initial 15 years of his career creating start-ups. First in the United States where he co-founded VXtreme, a technology company based in Silicon Valley that he later sold to Microsoft. And secondly in Spain where he launched 4 companies in the digital video space.


David is one of the early inventors of streaming media and holds 16 international patents. He has also been the president of 5TONIC, a 5G research association in Spain, and has served on the board of the Telecom Infrastructure Project (TIP) and of several start-ups.  He has taught Entrepreneurship at IE Business School.


David is a Telecommunications Engineer from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, has a Master's Degree in Computer Science from Stanford University and an Executive Certificate in Management and Leadership from M.I.T.
