Cities Today

Closing the digital divide in mid-sized US cities

Cities have scrambled during the pandemic to provide emergency hotspots and Wi-Fi to residents to help them work and study. There is now a recognition that they must also tackle the issue longer-term by providing affordable fiber broadband services to homes and businesses. That along with new, historic federal funding means this could be a watershed moment for getting all citizens connected and creating a platform for advanced city services. For this report, Cities Today surveyed 25 decision-makers in mid-sized US cities (100,000- 500,000 residents) and augmented this information with in-depth interviews. The findings aim to outline the shared opportunity and challenges facing cities to help everyone move faster. We also highlight examples of and strategies for success.

IoT Now

IoT Now MWC: Could connectivity become top dog for IoT service providers?

IoT Now (https://www.iot-now.com/) was launched in 2010 and today is read by more than 190,000 Internet of Things (IoT) professionals in over 100 countries worldwide. It has become the leading global publication explaining, developing and refining IoT-enabled business. Global news, interviews, videos and feature articles are published online every day. IoT Now also produces a quarterly digital magazine, and a monthly email newsletter -- both available free of charge. Our editors regularly post on social media, we host Live webinars with our industry partners. Expert Panellists from IoT Now contribute to the monthly Trending Tech Podcast, analysing business opportunities and overcoming technical challenges in a uniquely entertaining, provocative and amusing format.

At its simplest, the Internet of Things (IoT) involves devices sharing data in a wired or wireless network. Yet, the IoT has also become the largest and most complex information network that humans have ever created. The IoT was once made up of one-to-one connections, recording simple remote events such as temperature changes or stock levels. Today, however, enterprises are using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to cut operating costs, roll out innovative customer services and generate new revenues in all industrial and social sectors; from monitoring vehicle, driver and load conditions to controlling smart cities, utilities and waste management, from remote healthcare and smart homes, to connected agriculture and manufacturing.

New services need flexible business models, and partner ecosystems are evolving. Today there is strong competition for fixed line and licenced cellular networks from low cost, low power-consumption, long range, proprietary networks. They can all deliver long-term services, and a rapid Return on Investment in sectors as diverse as domestic energy metering and remote monitoring of industrial machines. And as satellite connection costs fall and capabilities grow, next gen IoT services are now in reach.
