Spain has taken bold steps to expand the country’s digital economy, and 2021 saw the realisation of several major policy initiatives. In April, the Spanish Government approved the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, which will inter alia direct €4 billion of EU recovery funds between 2021 and 2023 to projects that promote connectivity and the deployment of 5G. In May, the government approved its 5G roadmap, which is part of a broader package of initiatives to promote digital transformation. In July, the 700 MHz band was auctioned with a clear focus on promoting investment and a vast and quick deployment of 5G technology. Other positive moves have supported digital inclusion, simplification of network deployment procedures, reduction of tax on 5G spectrum, and more.
