Speaker Bio
George Kamiya is the Director of Climate Insights at the GSMA, providing strategic advice and analysis on energy, climate, and circular economy to support the mobile industry’s transition to net zero. He is the lead author of “Rethinking Mobile Phones: The Business Case for Circularity” and the GSMA’s annual Mobile Net Zero report.
Prior to joining the GSMA in 2023, he worked for the International Energy Agency (IEA/OECD) for eight years, leading the agency’s modelling and analysis on digitalisation (including data centre energy use), critical minerals demand, and tracking clean energy progress. While at the IEA, George published several early studies on the environmental impacts of digital technologies and services, including streaming video, bitcoin, and AI. He has also co-authored reports for the European Commission Joint Research Centre and UN Trade and Development.
George is also a Visiting Fellow at Reuben College, University of Oxford. He recently served as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Industrial Ecology’s Special Issue on Environmental Impacts of the Digital Economy, and has guest lectured on the environmental impacts of AI at Mila, McGill, TU Berlin, and Climate Change AI.
George has a BSc in Marine Biology and a Masters in Resource Management (Energy and Transport) and has also worked on environmental management and policy at the Government of Canada and the Vancouver Airport Authority.
