GSMA Open Gateway Launches in Greece: Greek Mobile Operators Collaborate to Transform Fraud Prevention and Ensure Customer Security
COSMOTE TELEKOM and Vodafone cooperate to Introduce Network APIs, Setting a New Standard for Market Safety and Innovation
MWC26 Barcelona, 6 March 2026 – COSMOTE TELEKOM and Vodafone, Greece’s leading mobile operators, today announced they will launch innovative network APIs under the GSMA Open Gateway initiative. This collaboration brings a new era of enhanced digital security and fraud prevention, demonstrating the operators’ joint commitment to protecting the identities and online safety of Greek mobile customers while driving progress in the digital economy.
This cooperation marks a milestone for Greece’s telecommunications sector, as two providers come together to deliver Number Verification and SIM Swap APIs. Through this joint effort, COSMOTE TELEKOM and Vodafone are empowering businesses with seamless access to security solutions, unlocking new possibilities to combat fraud and safeguard online experiences.
Revolutionizing Digital Security with Joint Innovation
Developed on the CAMARA standard, Number Verify and SIM Swap APIs represent powerful tools for combating fraud and improving authentication processes.
- Number Verification: Designed to securely and automatically confirm a user’s identity during login processes, this API eliminates the need for SMS-based one-time passwords. By streamlining authentication into an automated background process, businesses can deliver a smoother user experience while reducing vulnerabilities associated with manual input methods.
- SIM Swap: Built to detect when a mobile number has been recently linked to a new SIM card, this API helps enterprises mitigate account takeover fraud —particularly for sensitive transactions in sectors like financial services. Businesses can use this tool to enhance their security protocols and ensure safer interactions with customers.
Fraud Prevention and Seamless Experiences
COSMOTE TELEKOM and Vodafone are redefining security standards in Greece’s mobile services market. By introducing these APIs, they address critical challenges such as account takeovers, authentication failures, and fraudulent activity, providing enterprises and developers with reliable tools for customer protection.
At the same time, the new services promote simplicity and interoperability, enabling digital platforms across Greece to deliver faster, safer, and frictionless user experiences. Later this year, COSMOTE TELEKOM and Vodafone will take innovation a step further with the introduction of Number Verification v2, expanding its functionality to third-party connections like WiFi and VPN, further enhancing its impact on the market.
A Unified Commitment to Market Safety and Growth
This collaboration underscores a shared vision of fostering safety and growth within Greece's mobile ecosystem, while also constitutes an innovative ecosystem that will contribute to the digital development of many applications in the future. COSMOTE TELEKOM and Vodafone exemplify how competitors can work together for the greater good of customers and enterprises alike.
Global Perspectives Through GSMA Open Gateway
This initiative aligns with the global GSMA Open Gateway, in which Greece joined at MWC26 Barcelona, a framework that unites telecommunications networks worldwide through programmable APIs. With 85 operator groups representing 300 networks, and 81% of mobile connections globally, the initiative further amplifies the value of the services launched in Greece, enabling developers to expand internationally and drive revenue opportunities beyond borders.
Industry Leaders Comment on the Collaboration:
