As the Mobile for Development Utilities Market Engagement Director, Ilana manages the Innovation Grant Fund which funds organisations using mobile to improve energy, water and sanitation services for the underserved. Prior to joining the GSMA, Ilana spent two years as a consultant in water and sanitation services, including the application of mobile tools to monitor service delivery and raise awareness. This grew out of her master’s research on the use of mobile payments for water bills in Kenya and throughout East Africa. During her consulting, Ilana also carried out research for the World Bank following up on the impact of the Water Hackathon and subsequently organised the World Bank Sanitation Hackathon in London. Prior to this, Ilana worked as an environmental consultant in California carrying out environmental impact assessments. Ilana holds an MSc Water Science, Policy and Management from Oxford University and a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from Brandeis University.
