About this Short

Doctoring photos and videos used to take a lot of work. Now the advent of AI-generated imagery (using GAN technology) has made it disconcertingly easy for anyone to convincingly tweak images or videos or generate credible images of people who don’t exist. These AI ‘deepfakes’ have an alarming potential to sow discord and disinformation. Regulators must decide upon the most appropriate interventions and social media companies must act now to demonstrate that they are integrating deepfake countermeasures directly into their platforms. This thought-provoking short highlights the dangerous and very real potential for deepfakes to be used to weaponize AI while also providing an understanding of the technologies and countermeasures that can be deployed to combat malicious use.
