How 5G is connecting our world

As COVID-19 pushes network resilience to its limit, its value to society has never been greater. 2020 was to be the year of 5G, but faced with social and financial uncertainty, the spotlight has also fallen on legacy technologies to deliver life’s ‘new normal’.

MWC Barcelona examines the enterprise connectivity ecosystem, discussing how the full potential of global connectivity may be complex and challenging – but the opportunity is near limitless in its impact.

“Connectivity is an integral part of our mission to bring people closer together. In collaboration with partners around the world, we’re focused on developing new ways to make high-quality internet more affordable and accessible. The telco industry is ripe for change, and innovation around open, disaggregated solutions is key to unlocking new ways to connect the next 3.5 billion people.”

Innovation Through Open Source

Session Description

Every mobile network needs a high-performance packet core at the center of its network. Off the shelf packet core solutions can be expensive for MNOs, ISPs, MSOs, and Enterprises and the dependency on the vendor who maintains the rights to proprietary technology makes it difficult to maintain. In order to advance the mission to connect more people with better internet, Facebook Connectivity has developed and open-sourced a market-leading Enhanced Packet Core to bring the most advanced packet core technology at the lowest Total Cost of Ownership to MNOs, ISPs, MSOs, and Enterprises that need to launch mobile broadband services.

Network Disaggregation- OpenRAN Journey, From Concept to Deployments

Session Description

Connectivity creates a large opportunity for the economy, including for the enterprise segment, where they will facilitate a massive automation of industrial processes; for municipalities, providing the infrastructure to support smart cities, and for the consumer segment, where new digital experiences and products will be possible with connectivity. To make this happen, operators need a different approach to networks, with more collaboration both at the infrastructure level and at the technical level, to achieve the required economies of scale that will support network investments. In the particular case of technology, the network supply chain is currently very concentrated in a few vendors, and an increase in its robustness will also create incentives for new investments. This panel will include discussion with 3 major operators about (1) demand signal for OpenRAN solutions, (2) their OpenRAN journey, and (3) OpenRAN roadmap, SoC strategy.

    Next Generation Fronthaul Conformance Testing

Driven mainly by the O-RAN Alliance, service providers worldwide are driving adoption of an open RAN for 5G. The O-RAN Alliance has defined a 5G RAN architecture that breaks down what was once a single-vendor, hardware-centric RAN into several sections. Interoperable standards precisely define the interfaces between these sections.
