Kimmo Pentikäinen studied philosophy and design. He has successfully transformed the business of Elisa and its partners several times. In 2020, Boston Consulting Group ranked Elisa as the telecom company with the third-highest return globally. The company is the market leader in Finland, with the highest mobile data usage per capita in the world.
Kimmo’s current focus is on scaling the 5G business with new services. He leads product development, based on working with over 50 customers to co-create innovations. In two years, he has brought to market 26 new, highly successful 5G services, including a 4K multicamera supervision system for vehicles, 5G video robots for treating COVID-19 patients in hospitals, 5G multiple camera television broadcasting, drone services, 12K video streaming, remote control of heavy machines, 8K remote education and the world’s fastest 5G services, achieving 6 Gbps in medical imaging and gaming.
Kimmo’s extensive experience and expertise in a range of fields is based on his previous leadership in the company. He led Elisa’s transformation to using AI in internal processes, including in mobile network operations and customer interactions. Drawing on his previous experience as a startup entrepreneur, he has established for Elisa Corporation a strong global network of thousands of startups.
While head of research, Kimmo created a network of over 1,000 scientists around the world, with a focus on strong research into using AI to renew the organisation's core competences and strategy. While he was responsible for technology strategy, Elisa began a period of increased cost efficiency, maintaining a steady increase in revenues and continuing to post its best results ever – year after year. In 2009, he established Elisa’s climate activity, and now the Financial Times places Elisa in the top ten of its Europe’s Climate Leaders 2021 list.
