John is a partner with the international law firm of Reed Smith LLP. Based out of San Francisco, John has over 30 years’ experience as a technology and commercial trial lawyer. Recently, on behalf of his client, Uber, John was the lead attorney on the groundbreaking Uber v. Phunware lawsuit, in which Uber sought to recover payments made to a mobile advertising network. Among other things, Uber brought fraud and civil racketeering claims against Phunware based on Uber’s belief that Phunware had improperly collected millions of dollars from Uber during its multi-year, multi-million dollar mobile advertising campaign. Teaming up with the forensic investigation experts from Kochava, John and his team extensively analyzed mobile advertising campaign metrics and uncovered explicit evidence of Phunware’s behavior. Based on this and other evidence, Uber prevailed in the case due to Phunware’s destruction of key evidence. The case settled shortly thereafter. The Phunware case was but one lawsuit John has handled with Kochava relating to Uber’s mobile advertising campaign.
