Speaker Bio

Alex Iranzo. MD, PhD, was born in Barcelon, Spain, in 1966. He graduated in Medicine and Surgery (1991) and Neurology (1996) and defended his thesis at the University of Barcelona (2002), Spain. He works since 1998 as a Specialist in Neurology at the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona. Presently, he is consultant senior and Head of Neurophysiology at the Neurology Service of the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona, Spain.  
He is Professor at the University of Barcelona School of Medicine and coordinator of a Master on Sleep and sleep disorders” at the same University. He is Director or co-Director of 11 Doctoral Thesis at the University of Neurology.  
He is leader group of the Clinical Neurophysiology group of IDIBAPS since 2019. 
He is accredited as Sleep Expert by the European Research Society (2014) and Spanish Sleep Society (2013). He is former president of the Spanish Sleep Society (2018-2021), former Treasurer Assistant of the World Association of Sleep Medicine (2009-2013) and former member of the scientific committee of the European Sleep Research Society (2012-2014) and Spanish Neurology Society (2014-2015).  
He is member of the editorial board of the scientific journals Sleep, Sleep Medicine and Current Option Treatment of Neurology  
Dr Iranzo has widely published as both first and corresponding author in The Lancet, The Lancet Neurology, Annals of Neurology, Neurology, Journal of Neurology, Movement Disorders, Parkinsonism and Related Disorders, Sleep, and Sleep Medicine. His research has focused on REM sleep behavior disorder as a model of prodromal synucleinopathy and contributed to the first description of the anti-IgLON5 disease. His research also includes the study of sleep in neurological diseases including Parkinson’s disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, multiple system atrophy, narcolepsy, and restless legs syndrome.  
Overall, he has published more than 250 articles (total impact factor of 2.315, Hirsch Index is of 62). He has participated giving presentations at 297 congresses and at 224 courses and symposiums. He won 11 prizes on his publications. He is prime investigator and collaborator on 16 competitive projects and has participated as primer investigator on 17 clinical trials coordinated by pharmaceutical companies.
