Sustainability on Mobile Devices: Tracking Impact

Tue, 1 Mar: 14:45 - 15:45 CET

MWC Stage B, Hall 5

Session Description

Climate change and being more sustainable is at the forefront of everyone’s minds, and never more so in the massive telecommunication device market. In May 2021, the Eco-rating Initiative introduced a ratings programme in Europe for device manufactures to voluntary join to establish harmonised solution for mobile device sustainability. This labelling and scoring system was initially launched in 24 European counties, and now it has expanded globally to new countries in Europe, Latin America and Africa. So far it is being supported by 16 global manufacturers and for more than 150 devices including players such as Samsung , Xiaomi, Oppo and HMD/Nokia to name but a few. New smartphones will be assessed against 19 criteria such as durability, recyclability, reparability, climate and resource efficiency and are given a score out of a maximum of 100 to communicate their environmental impact. This session will discuss on the progress of the industry to reduce the environmental impact and on the other hand the growing demand from environmentally conscious consumers to incorporate sustainability as a criteria in the purchase decision.
