Roadmap for 5G Terrestrial and Non-Terrestrial Networks

Wed, 2 Mar: 17:00 - 18:00 CET

Theatre 4, Hall 7

Session Description

The Next evolution of 5G wireless connectivity is envisioned to involve both terrestrial and Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN). Non-terrestrial networks have a role to play in extending 5G coverage by integrating and complementing terrestrial networks. Variants of NTN technologies like LEO satellites constellations, High Altitude Platforms (HAPS), Low Altitude Platforms (LAPS), and air-to-ground (A2G) networks are being either deployed or developed to be deployed in the near future. These NTN technologies are becoming an integral part of the future wireless network topology to connect the unconnected. A high-level panel with distinguished industry speakers, from OneWeb, Nokia, Intelsat and BCG, will take the main stage of this session to discuss the current state of NTN, the technology outlook and roadmap to 6G, how it will complement terrestrial networks, and whether complementarity could turn into competition.
As Saudi Arabia has been an example case study in the latest GSMA report “Roadmaps for awarding 5G spectrum in the MENA region”, this panel will be preceded by the Communication and Information Technology Commission (CITC) shedding light briefly on its upcoming multiple awards and auctions to release more than 350 MHz of spectrum in the 450, 600, 700, 2100, and 3800 MHz bands for 5G, broadband Mission-Critical communications, and non-terrestrial networks, to deliver its commitment to connect the nation to the future.
This session will conclude with an exciting announcement regarding a successful trial of a 'world-first' 5G NTN technology, and viewing recorded footage of the technical experiment that has taken place recently.
