The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a staggering increase in global humanitarian need. The number of people requiring assistance is expected to increase to 235 million in 2021, up 40% on the previous year. With over one billion mobile money accounts worldwide, there is enormous potential for the use of digital technology – specifically mobile money services – to accelerate lifesaving cash transfers in global emergencies, including pandemics and natural disasters. The GSMA, through its members and in cooperation with humanitarian partners such as the United Nations World Food Programme, accelerates the realisation of this potential. This session will highlight the GSMA’s expertise in mobile money and humanitarian response, in discussion with our mobile network operator members and our humanitarian partners.
This hybrid session will take place in the Ministerial Stage and is available to all Ministerial Programme attendees. The session will also be live streamed via MyMWC. Please note that the GSMA Ministerial Programme is an invitation-only event. Find out more.
